Survival of the fittest and the ‘largest’ in Agar.io

Agar.io shows how great and interesting and engrossing simplicity can be. Based on biology and cell mechanics, the game has garnered popularity and fame from all over the world. The name ‘agar’ is derived from agar, a substance obtained from certain algae and used for cell culture in microbiology.

Features

The game is based on cell culture mechanics. It is played using mouse and keyboard on a web browser. It can also be played on a smartphone. Agario has received critical praise for simplicity and competitive nature. It falls under the massively multiplayer online games category. Agario has players from all over the world. Its simplicity makes it ideal to start the game anytime anywhere and can keep you engrossed for a long time. The game map is finite and simple. There are various modes to play like Team mode, FFA mode, Party mode and Experimental mode. You can play with your friends in the Party mode. There are various skins available for agario. The skins range from inanimate objects to caricatures and cartoons of famous celebrities and iconic objects.

Game mechanics

It is a simple game of survival. Just as cells grow in size and multiply or split, agario too has these features. Every player is represented in the game by a cell. The player need to grow his cell by eating other cells (players). There are some inert cells created by the game itself. The player can eat these too for growing. There are viruses which when eaten splits the player’s cell into smaller cells. Viruses larger than the player’s cell cannot be eaten. The game resets after 1 hour automatically. The largest cell standing wins. As the cell grows its speed decreases. Cell can be moved with the mouse. By splitting the cell (with space bar) or releasing some mass of it (with ‘w’ key), makes the cell move faster. The cells are not easy to move and their movement is similar to how objects move on a slimy surface. There are not sudden sharp movements by the cells and it feels like they glide on the game map.
